PAL & NTSC
1996-2007
In 1996, Sony launched its own professional version of DV, called DVCAM.
Like DVCPRO, DVCAM uses bound audio, which prevents audio sync drift that can occur on DV when multi-generational copies are made.
When recording, DVCAM uses a 15 µm track, which is 50% wider than the base track. Accordingly, the tape runs 50% faster, which reduces recording time by one third compared to standard DV. Because of the wider track, DVCAM is able to insert frame-accurately, while standard DV may differ by a few frames when recording compared to the preview.
